Transitioning to 100% light-duty electric vehicle sales by 2030 and 100% medium-duty electric vehicle and heavy-duty electric truck sales by 2035 avoids approximately 150,000 premature deaths compared with No New Policy. The reduction in harmful air pollutants, such as fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides, as well as greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, equates to nearly $1.3 trillion in health and environmental savings through 2050. Gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles emit harmful pollutants that disproportionately impact low-income communities and communities of color. The switch to electric cars and trucks envisioned in the DRIVE Clean scenario, combined with emissions reductions from electrifying buildings and industry, results in 45% economy-wide GHG emissions reductions by 2030, relative to 2005 levels.
